One of Zaha Hadid’s final projects: The Morpheus Hotel
Like art and painting, architecture is a visual art form with buildings. An architect meant to give pleasure to the onlooker as a product of human innovation, initiative and above all, imagination.
The world’s first female star architect – Zaha Hadid challenged traditional ways of making architecture. Hadid was the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture prize in 2004 and she also became the first woman in her own right to be awarded RIBA’s Royal Gold Medal.
She was born in Baghdad in 1950, and she started out as a female architect with her Iraqi Arab background. This field is a career sphere mainly inhabited by men, she has described feeling like an outsider in the industry which is a field dominated by white men. In the past, her design ideas were often dismissed as impractical or as too radical, and her refusal to compromise on her ideas even when very few of them were being realised in concrete and steel. In order to succeed, she had a difficult time crossing and exceeding boundaries whether personal or professional. She gradually built her greater representation of women in the field. Zaha Hadid was not just a woman in an industry dominated by men, she was also an architect with distinctive design philosophy which put her in a predominantly white field, particularly in the UK.
The press called her “the queen of curves”, because of her use of geometric shapes to create dynamic structures, and her architecture is never easily grouped with one particular architectural style. Her creations have been commissioned from around the globe and her major projects included the Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi, the London Olympics Aquatics Centre, and Guangzhou Opera House. Morpheus hotel is one of the last projects she worked on before her untimely death in 2016. Conceptualised by the futuristic mind of Zaha Hadid, Morpheus hotel is a pioneer in both art and architecture industry, marking the rise of the most luxurious and creative landmark of Macao.
In the beginning, Hadid’s design was one perceived to be unbuildable and the people struggled to move beyond the sketch phrase and transformed it into bricks and buildings. While Morpheus was in the progress of making, it seemed like an impossible infrastructure to build, many challenges came along but at the end of completion it was definitely worth every day of dedicated labour. Finally, the hotel opens its doors to its guest in 2018. Zaha Hadid designed the name of the Hotel to be ‘Morpheus.’ Derived from Greek mythology, Morpheus means the god of dreams, and Morpheus, the shapes seen in dreams.
Taking inspiration of the fluid forms within China tradition of jade carving, Zara Hadid defined Morpheus’s design with combination of sculptural forms and flowing curves for a final result of the world’s first free-form high rise exoskeleton building. The facade of the building has been carved with voids, thus creating a net-like exterior which lets natural light pour through. The concept of this sort of design also maximises the number of hotel rooms with views, guaranteeing an equal room distribution on either side of the building, with corner suites offering views of both the internal atrium and the city beyond. The voids create the urban window that link the hotel’s interior communal spaces with the city.
The Morpheus is based on a simple extrusion of the existing abandoned foundation; there is a pair of towers connected at ground and roof levels. The building itself is formed of two circulation cores that connect at the base via a podium, separate, then merge again at the height of 35 meters at rooftop level. The exoskeleton optimises both the interior and exterior spaces that are uninterrupted by supporting walls or columns, its rich pattern of structural spaces tie disparate programmes together and constantly make connections.
The Morpheus’ interior spaces necessitated a high degree of adaptability to accommodate the many varying requirements of its guest amenities. The building’s exoskeleton optimises the interiors by creating spaces that are uninterrupted by supporting walls or columns. In total, 28,000 tons of steel were used to construct the free-form high-rise exoskeleton, this amount is four times the amount of iron used to build the Eiffel Tower in Paris. This is not just one of the amazing fact about Morpheus Hotel, it also took 48,000 sq. meters of glass to cover the whole building which just enough to fame 1, 20,000 Mona Lisa’s.
Upon entering the hotel, the guest will be welcomed to step into the twelve glass elevators, a high-speed panoramic lift to discover panoramic views of the hotel’s sculptural interior spaces and the breath taking views of the City, Macao spreading out below. Morpheus has approximately 770 five-star guest rooms, suites and villas, and includes civic spaces, event facilities, gaming rooms, lobby atrium, restaurants, spa and rooftop pool, as well as extensive back-of-house areas and ancillary facilities. The semi-enclosed rooftop pool is located at the 40th floor above the city, gaze through the city skyline while enjoying this facility at the Morpheus. This feeling can be compared to floating through the air and swimming under the stars.
This iconic structure cost £84 million to build and set to redefine high-end hospitality with the world’s most exquisite brands through the room’s impressive amenities include Frette and Mühldorfer bed linen, The Madison Collection bath linen, Bernardaud chinaware, Royal Selangor bathroom accessories, Hermès and Acqua di Parma toiletries, Alessi tableware, Dyson hairdryers, and Nespresso coffee machines.
